If you’re looking for large luxury SUVs to lease, something away from what the European brands offer. Something bold, powerful, and well refined. The Cadillac and the Chevrolet brands have something that may excite you.
Both the Cadillac Escalade and the Chevy Tahoe are one of the top choices among shoppers looking to lease a luxury SUV for the whole family. Whether you’re a fan of GM or not, these two American luxury SUVs use the same GM platform but still afford different design language, space, power, and styling.
So, which of these big and powerful SUVs is the right one for you? Is leasing the 2022 Cadillac Escalade going to give you a more well-rounded family SUV than leasing the 2022 Chevy Tahoe?
Now in its second model year after getting a ground-up redesign in 2021, Cadillac has further pumped the Escalade with more state-of-the-art tech features and style to compete better with rivals. The 2022 Escalade, which debuted in 2021 as the Escalade’s fifth generation, comes into the 2022 Cadillac lineup with no significant changes.
For 2022, the Escalade, Cadillac’s best-selling SUV, comes with some minor updates that include more standard safety and convenience features across the lineup. The 2022 Escalade entry-level now affords the Super Cruise driver assistance tech as standard, along with the Lane-keeping assist and lane-departure warning. Higher up the trim level, more safety features are now part of the party, including the Cadillac’s Super Cruise driver assist feature and front and rear automated emergency braking. Replacing the retired paint colors are three new optional colors—Mahogany Metallic, Galactic Gray Metallic, and Wilder Metallic. Also, the 2022 Escalade packs the GM’s Buckle to Drive seat belt safety system, while its new Touring package now affords air suspension, illuminated door sill protector plates, and soft-close doors.
Just last year, Chevy gave its three-row family SUV, the Tahoe, a complete redesign to mark the beginning of its fifth generation. For 2022, the Chevrolet Tahoe makes it back to the 2022 Chevrolet lineup with only minor updates and some tweaks within the 2022 Tahoe trims.
For 2022, a 6.2-liter V8 engine with 420 hp is now available in the Tahoe’s RST, Z71, and Premier trim levels. The off-road-oriented Z71 trim now packs an electronic limited-slip differential. Besides the base model, all 2022 Tahoe comes with a customizable 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The 10.2-inch infotainment system has been enhanced with Google-based voice controls, maps, and an app store. Tahoe also receives more standard safety and driver-assist features, including automatic high-beams, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, and GM’s Buckle to Drive seatbelt reminder. Finally, the new Tahoe can access up to 13 different camera views.
Powertrain And Transmission
Regardless of which of these SUVs you finally settle with, you’re going to get ample power and excellent torque. But if you want more power, leasing the 2022 Cadillac Escalade will give you that, as it comes standard with 65 more horses under the hood than the Tahoe. The Escalade also gets more torque than the Tahoe, with the base engine producing 460 lb-ft compared to the 383 lb-ft by 2022 Tahoe. However, opting for the Tahoe’s available 6.2-liter V8 gives you the same power and torque as the Escalade.
All engines for both big SUVs use a quick and smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission.
Cadillac offers two powertrain choices in the 2022 Escalade. The base model comes with a 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine that pushes out 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. The second powertrain is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six diesel engine that sends 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque to either the front wheels or all wheels.
Chevrolet offers many powertrain choices in the 2022 Tahoe. The base model is powered by a 5.3-liter V8 engine with 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. While this base engine provides ample power to keep this big SUV moving with little effort, two optional engines are for improved performance. The first is the 6.2-liter V8 that coughs out 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. The second is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six that sends 277 hp and 460 lb-ft to either the rear wheels or a four-wheel.
Handling And Performance
Both three-row SUVs affords composed handling, with little body roll, sharp and firm steering, and are easy to maneuver despite their sizes. While these SUVs are not particularly engaging to drive, if you want to lease a more performance-based option of the two, leasing the 2022 Chevy Escalade is your best bet.
The 2022 Escalade is a lot quicker than the 2022 Tahoe. It also affords a more comfortable and relaxing ride quality, thanks to its standard air suspension that does a great job absorbing road imperfections. The 2022 Tahoe also has the Magnetic Ride Control with Adaptive Air Ride suspension, but optional.
For a more fuel-efficient large SUV, you’re better off with the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe lease deal. The 2022 Escalade base model gets an EPA fuel economy number of 15/20 mpg city/highway with RWD and 14/19 mpg with 4WD. Opting to the optional I-6 pushes the numbers up to 21/27 mpg city/highway for RWD models and 20/26 mpg city/highway for 4WD models.
The 2022 Tahoe with the base powertrain returns 21/28 mpg city/highway with the rear-wheel and 20/26 mpg city/highway with the four-wheel models. The thirstier optional V8 earns 16/20 mpg city/highway, while the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six is rated at 15/20 mpg.
If you still think that these two GM’s SUVs are similar, step into the cabin of each, and you’ll find how they are so much different. While the Tahoe offers a decent interior with quality materials, it is nowhere as well-appointed as the luxury interior of the Escalade that is a sea of screens.
There’s no shortage of passenger or cargo space in these large family-friendly SUVs. However, the base model of the Tahoe is slightly roomier than the base model of the Escalade. The Escalade seats up to eight people, while the Tahoe has an impressive seating capacity of nine.
