Introducing The 2023 Ford Explorer EV: Incisive Preview

As part of its plan to make its lineup consist of up to 40% EVs by 2030, Ford announced that it would be offering an all-electric version of the Explorer SUV. This popular American automaker of well-built and affordable cars looks to boost its EV portfolio that already has the Mustang Mach-E electric crossover, the E-transit electric van, and the upcoming F-150 Lightning pickup truck.

The Explorer has been one of Ford’s best-selling and most successful models for years. So, taking all the winning formula in the regular Explorer, swapping the internal combustion engines with an electric motor, and adding more futuristic tech niceties to this three-row SUV make perfect sense.

While the ICE Explorer will still be produced at the Ford Chicago Assembly Plant, the all-new electric Explorer will be built in Mexico at the Ford Cuautitlan Assembly Plant, just like the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Presently, Explorer is available in hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. However, the latter is not offered in the US market.

Engine & Performance

Ford has also revealed that it is developing new rear- and all-wheel-drive flexible electric-vehicle platforms. These electric platforms will support future Ford EVs in the different segments, including rugged SUVs, pickups, and cargo vehicles.

The regular ICE Ford Explorer is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 300 horses. An optional 3.0-liter V6 generates 365 to 400 horsepower. Finally, a hybrid variant combines a 3.3-liter V6 and an electric motor to produce 318 horsepower and 322 pound-feet of torque.

Considering that the new F-150 Lightning electric truck picks up nearly everything under the hood of the regular trucks, it won’t be a surprise to see the all-new Explorer taking the same approach.

Range & Charging

Although the Explorer will be Ford’s first three-row SUV that is fully electric, Ford is yet to share further details about this SUV, especially the range and charging. However, as the new Mach-E boasts an electric range of up to 305 miles per charge, and with every other new Ford EVs getting a driving range of up to 300 miles, the Explorer will likely come with the same range or slightly more.

Interior, Cargo

There are no other EVs in the midsize three-row SUV class yet. Although few options offer an available third-row option, unfortunately, that’s never enough for large family shoppers. If you’re looking to lease a spacious and comfortable three-row electric SUV cruiser for the whole family, the upcoming Ford Explorer EV is the answer.

Ford didn’t say what we would be seeing inside the upcoming Explorer. Still, we will likely see the latest Ford’s Sync 4A infotainment system found in the Mach-E and the F-150 Lightning. This infotainment system sports a giant 15.5-inch touchscreen and lots of connective features.

It is reported that Ford has postponed the earlier announced date for the Explorer EV from mid-2023 to 2024.
